eMaint CMMS Brings Relevance and Practical Skills
Into the Classroom through HETA Program

The Humberside Engineering Training Association (HETA) program is a rapidly expanding Group Training Association (GTA) providing engineering apprenticeships and skills training. Utilizing eMaint in the classroom provided several unexpected learning opportunities, especially centered around maintenance planning.

BACKGROUND

The Humberside Engineering Training Association (HETA) program is a rapidly expanding Group Training Association (GTA) providing engineering apprenticeships and skills training for over 250 companies in the Humber, England region. The program also offers learners a route into higher education with Higher National Certificate (HNC) and Higher National Diploma (HND) as progression routes into engineering degree programs. For the past three years, Steve Underwood has taught these courses for HETA.

Because about 85% of the program’s coursework involves mechanical or electrical maintenance, Steve thought that a course about establishing maintenance plans for engineering and manufacturing plants with a CMMS component would be an extremely relevant addition to the program. When the concept was approved, he looked for an industry standard CMMS provider with a proven track record of exceptional support, delivered on a platform that was accessible from anywhere. eMaint was selected based on these parameters.

THE CHALLENGE

Steve devised the “Plant Maintenance & Decommissioning” course. This focuses on helping students become the next generation of maintenance leaders, and is composed of three main topics: maintenance theory and strategies, legislation of maintenance, and CMMS.

To begin working with eMaint, Steve and the students used eMaint University to learn their way around the system. They found eU to easy to use, with the system itself very intuitive, and quickly began understanding the system without any prior training. If any questions arose, the group would contact eMaint Support and receive an answer within minutes.

Then, students were given autonomy to establish assets, tasks and procedures, preventive maintenance (PM) tasks and ultimately develop complete maintenance plans. They estimated the time to complete each task and produced work orders, as well as associated costs and labor.

RESULTS

Utilizing eMaint in the classroom provided several unexpected learning opportunities, especially centered around maintenance planning. With 70 assets and 300 parts to manage, the students began to recognize the need to accurately schedule work and ensure that parts, staff, and the assets themselves would be available at the scheduled time.

The need for priority identification, capacity planning and inventory control became very visible, and the importance of the maintenance supervisors/planners role was revealed to many of the students. Interacting with the system brought practical problems of the workplace into the classroom environment, allowing students to practice applying knowledge and skills to ultimately streamline processes, reduce costs, improve work execution and boost the overall productivity for their current or future employers.

Underwood noted that, for students who struggled in traditional math and sciences courses, the relevance of using a CMMS helped produce exceptional output. Students discovered the usefulness of concepts such as making sure work isn’t duplicated by nesting PMs, continuously optimizing of maintenance plans and developing asset histories for better insight into equipment operation.

Overall, Steve and his students had a very positive experience with the course material, and using eMaint CMMS to support their learning goals. In the future, Steve is looking to incorporate benchmarking key performance indicators (KPIs), reporting, and predictive maintenance technologies.
