More than half a century ago, the animated series "The Jetsons" imagined a future where machines managed much of everyday life. Homes ran on push-button automation, robot assistants handled routine tasks, and computers oversaw the workplace. In one memorable moment, George Jetson begins to say, "I think…" only to be interrupted by his manager: "You think? Your machine is supposed to do the thinking, Jetson."
The line was satire. Yet the question it points to — what should machines actually do for us?
